At the time of his suicide Atchison was being housed in solitary confinement and was supposedly under close supervision.

Reportedly he had shown no signs of despondency.

Atchison’s attorney, James Thomas of Detroit issued a statement saying:

“Our heartfelt regrets go out to his wife and children, his parents and his brothers. This is a man who has done a lot of good in his life. Unfortunately, he is going to be judged by his most recent charges and what we have read in the media, and not by the goodness, hard work or by the love of his family.”

Thomas indicated that he would ask a federal judge to dismiss the charges against Atchison.
